Fifty years ago, in June 1967, the present-day Randolph Rescue Squad, Inc. (RRS) was established as an independent, non-profit volunteer rescue and first aid organization serving the entire Township of Randolph. Like all volunteer squads in New Jersey, RRS operates under regulations set by the NJ Department of Health, including requirements for certified training, vehicle inspections, equipment standards, and detailed reporting.
Prior to RRS, rescue services were fragmented. In 1942, the Mt. Freedom Fire Company #3 included its own rescue squad, followed by the Millbrook Rescue Squad formed by Millbrook Fire Company #2 in 1947. Neither served the full township. As state requirements grew more complex, the need for a single, fully compliant, township-wide squad became clear.
As Randolph expanded from a rural town to a suburban community of over 26,000 residents, RRS grew alongside it. What began as a one-bay garage on Route 10 has evolved into multiple locations, including headquarters and satellite bays. Today, the Squad operates four ambulances and a fire rehab vehicle, all owned by the Township.
RRS remains committed to providing volunteer emergency services. However, like many volunteer organizations nationwide, daytime staffing has become increasingly difficult. To ensure consistent coverage, the Township partners with Atlantic EMS for weekday daytime response, while RRS volunteers continue to serve evenings, nights, and weekends.
Modern EMS demands have also increased. Today’s volunteers undergo extensive training, maintain certification, and stay current with evolving equipment and protocols. The addition of a Junior Corps program has helped foster the next generation of EMTs. In 2009, a new headquarters was built to support expanded operations, training, and equipment needs.
Despite these changes, the mission remains the same: neighbors helping neighbors. RRS responds to emergencies across the community—in homes, on roadways, at schools and events, and in all conditions. Some calls are minor; others are life-threatening. Through it all, the Squad has relied on strong community support, including donations and Township funding.
Looking ahead, Randolph Rescue Squad remains committed to serving the community for years to come.
